Finding gainful employment using the internet can seem overwhelming at first glance. With the myriad of job search engines and networking sites, candidates often don’t know where to start. Thankfully, numerous websites provide helpful information on career planning and starting an effective online job search campaign.

Career Advice via Job Search Engines

Many employment websites including Monster, Yahoo! Hotjobs, CareerBuilder, and Thingamajob allow candidates to search for and apply to new openings. These sites also provide helpful occupational planning and advice. Topics include goal-setting, resume writing, training, and interview tips. Some sites including Monster feature forums where candidates can network and share information on effective search strategies.

Job Search Information Websites

The popular online information portal About.com features a wide variety of employment resources in its Jobs and Careers channel. Candidates can learn about occupational planning, resume tips, cover letter writing, occupational profiles, and how to search for and apply to new openings. Seekers can also learn about resume types and view sample resumes and cover letters. Other helpful sites include:

  • MSN Careers: This site offers in-depth occupational information including resume posting, services, and assistance; featured articles; aptitude tests; new opportunity alerts; and quizzes. Be sure to take advantage of the handy salary calculators to get a good idea of the average pay for the position.
  • WorkBloom: WorkBloom is one of the most comprehensive sites on the web for occupational information. Topics include resume writing and samples, cover letter writing, interview tips, networking advice, and business-related articles.
  • AOL Find a Job: AOL features a blog, search tools and resources, online education information, career planning, and resume tips on its Advice and Resources page. In the top menu on AOL’s careers home page, click Advice and Resources. Become a fan of AOL Jobs on Facebook.

Using Linkedin for Online Job Search Resources

Linkedin is a popular professional networking website where companies, recruiters, and candidates can connect. Members can post a resume, work history, objective, make and receive recommendations, and search for new opportunities. However, Linkedin offers another helpful feature that allows seekers to ask career related questions and have them answered by experts. To use this feature, simply click Answers from the top of the Linkedin home page.

Finding work during these difficult economic times may be challenging, but it’s not impossible. When candidates take advantage of the wealth of online employment search advice and career planning websites, the path to success becomes clearer. It’s just a matter of knowing where to look and how to leverage these sites to one’s advantage.

Another aspect in the job hunt is references, and making sure yours are in order. You can check what your references say about you, so you never give someone who doesn't provide a glowing report. Try www.reference-check.com or allisontaylor.com, they both do this kind of check.

Suppose there will be very few people who would disagree with your words because very often the advice you get from the resources you mention and from some other too really optimizes your job search.

Yes, we all assume that the information our references provide will be positive, but that is SO often NOT the case. Reference checking can help eliminate unpleasant suprises.
