Looking for a job in the sustainability field? Here are five of the best on-line green job websites to begin a job search.
No one can argue that the decline in the economy has wreaked havoc on the job market. However, there are certain industries that experts proudly proclaim take less of a hit even in down times; businesses in healthcare and education, for instance. Another field that claims to continue strong for obvious reasons is the field of sustainability. However, when it comes to looking for a green-collar job it can sometimes get confusing as to where to look. Sure, there are postings on the big job sites like Monster and Yahoo!, but these are all commingled in with other non-green jobs. So where to look for hot green-collar jobs exclusively? Where to Look for Hot Green-Collar JobsEnter the term green-collar or just green along with job or career into any Internet search engine and it will return a long list of sites that include job postings, articles, resources, organizations and much more. While this might be great for someone who is just interested in exploring website after website and reading everything they can about the sustainability field, for those interested in actually focusing on how to land a green-collar career it can seem like a long process. So here to help those green job seekers out is a list of five sustainability websites that offer candidates the kind of information that can not only prepare them for the interview, but can help them land the perfect green-collar job. They are included here based on the number of ways to search for jobs, richness of the employment opportunities posted, other career resources and information they offer job seekers and the price for posting jobs (since this will bear on whether employers are likely to post). The Top Five Green-Collar Career WebsitesOkay, so this first site does, in fact, contain a lot of varied green information, but it still offers a lot about green careers. Information on sustainlane.com ranges from family living and beauty & fashion to home & garden and health & wellness. It offers a laundry list of ideas for making green the main “collar” in anyone’s life. It’s an eye-dazzling site with plenty to read including green-career tips like how to write a green resume or get a green job. Jobs can be searched by keywords, location or the most recently posted. There’s no price listed for posting jobs, so that likely means it is free to employers. That's good news. Another great site is jobs.greenbiz.com. What is probably most impressive about this site are the names of the organizations which have chosen to post jobs here (immediately visible on the home page). Places like the California Energy Commission, Sierra Club, Southern California Edison, Greenpeace and the Dickinson College Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education all showed up. Jobs can be browsed by location, category and experience level. Plus there is a ton of green information including news, blogs, events, newsletters, videos, podcasts, reports, and professional services. Visitors can make a connection via LinkedIn and Twitter and employers can post jobs for free for 30 days. Next up: the Green Jobs Network. For those who like it plain and simple, check out greenjobsearch.orgwhich actually networks with other sites for its information. There is no flash here, just links to job hunting tips, listings of green-job resources and the green-collar blog that includes a three-part series on “Finding a Green Job.” The site also includes information on the growing green job sector with links to a collection of research and reports. Candidates can search for openings by keywords, company or location. Visitors can connect via LinkedIn. Job postings cost $25/each which is still reasonable enough to attract prospective employers. Then there is thegreenjobbank.com. Not a lot of detail, no pictures, just a lot of green, thegreenjobbank.com offers a resource page, links to green articles, forums for visitors to discuss active green topics and a number of green-collar job postings. There are multiple ways to search for jobs by type, location and employer. The good news is that it’s free to post jobs, always an attractive benefit to employers. Last, but certainly not least, is jobs.cleanedge.com. Simple in its design – maybe because it says it is still in the beta stage – jobs.cleanedge.com lists itself as “the premier source for clean–tech job seekers, employers, and recruiters.” Job seekers can search for green-collar openings by job function, industry or employer. In addition, there are green blogs and an extensive annual report about green jobs. Right now it is free to post openings, so it should attract employers. Plus the big name sponsors posted on the home page can’t hurt. The whole idea is that there are green-collar jobs out there. It’s just a matter of finding the right websites that offer the kind of information that job hunters seeking to enter the sustainability field can use. And here are five that can get the job search started. © 2010 Deborah S. Hildebrand
