Having a Job in a Recession

What can People do if They Hate Their Job?

May 8, 2009 Paul Larson

While it is highly desirable to have a job in a recession, there is still the quandary that arises for those who hate that job.

What can people do when they hate their job, and there is no way of getting out, especially if this is in a recession?

Millions of people have deal with this reality everyday. With a terrible economy and few companies hiring, making a career change is a major risk. People will laugh and say that those employed should be happy to even have a job in such a terrible time. They probably can say that because they don’t hate their job.

The cold hard truth is that most are stuck, at least for now. Their only choice is to make the best of the circumstances because, just because they hate their job doesn’t mean they can’t take something of value from the situation.

Here are five tips for people to make the most out of a job they hate.

Put Everything in Perspective

The first priority for all wage earners with dependents is to provide for the family. While they may hate their current situation, they should always remember that they are at least meeting this first obligation. It’s nice to love the job, but that is secondary to putting food on the table.

Build Solid Relationships

While the work might be unbearable, if people can enjoy the company of their coworkers, it won’t be too hard to handle the daily grind. Building relationships with coworkers is also a smart networking strategy. They know people at other companies and have connections. This strategy could lead to a better job within the company or possibly something with another firm.

Get Involved

It helps to find interesting projects. Getting involved helps build the resume to get the next job. This can also alleviate some boredom. Getting hands on experience in different areas can help get a transfer to a different department or location within the same company.

Learn about the Ideal Job

While everyone will have a different ideal position, people can think about the job they will eventually leave their current company for. They can learn everything about that position. They can also explore different career options within the same company if those options happen to reflect this ideal.

Get Away

People can take their mind off the situation whenever they get the chance. Meditation can work if the situation allows it. So does keeping a journal, so they can bring a notebook to jot down whatever comes to mind. Some work environments permit earphones. These can be for more than listening to music. They can use the time to listen to an audio book. Learning a new language is another productive possibility.

They can grab little opportunities to get out of the office whenever possible. They can take a walk outside to clear their mind, grab a cup of coffee, or do anything to physically get out of the office as much as possible. They should always take full advantage of the lunch break.

Nothing Lasts Forever

It’s important to set a deadline. People should tell themselves that this situation will not go on forever. They should give themselves a target date to find a new job. Having an end in site can be uplifting. With well defined preparation activities the end to the hated job can be seen on the horizon.
