Dressing for success and having a well prepared resume alone does not always make a job seeker's career fair experience a great success.

Career Fairs can be overwhelming with dozens of companies offering positions not necessarily suited for every job seeker. Once companies of interest have been narrowed down it is important for a job seeker to prepare strategically on how to use a career fair to his or her advantage. The job seeker should inquire about the interview sign up list which is usually provided on the attending companies’ website, the venue that is hosting the career fair’s website, or the contact person listed in the career fair advertisement. Securing an interview prior to the career fair can allow the job seeker to maximize one on one time with employers to avoid long lines and waiting times to speak to hiring representatives.

Successful interview Tips

Prepare by researching the company’s profile and mission statement. Be able to answer any questions regarding what products and services the company provides.

  1. The job seeker should be able to list at least three of the top reasons why he or she will fit into the company as a top tier performer. This is basically an elevator speech that quickly informs the interviewer of what the employer can expect if the job seeker is hired as the best candidate.
  2. Prepare a set of questions to ask the interviewer. If no questions are asked it may be perceived as lack of interest on behalf of the candidate. For example, find out as much as possible about the job expectations.
  3. Assertively shake the hand of the interviewer. A firm handshake is a subtle sign of self confidence
  4. Be sure to thank the interviewer before and after the interview
  5. Job seekers should not limit searches based on the preference of working at one company in particular. The goal is to find as many companies as possible to match individual skills and expertise.

Advice for Tailoring a Resume

Yes it is important for the job seeker to tailor his or her resume according to the specific position the employer is seeking candidates for. A recruiter or hiring executive usually does a quick scan over a resume and looks for key words. A part of the preparation prior to the Career Fair is to review the job descriptions of the positions available to make sure the resume that will be distributed at the event matches the desired skills of the employer’s interest. In addition, it is important that the resume conveys that the job seeker is results driven.

Rules for Dressing for Success

A highly competitive job market can create a probable cause for making image a deciding factor on the final candidate chosen for a position by employers. It is important to not only have experience, interpersonal skills and a strong educational background but also exude a well polished look. A well polished look includes personal grooming, dark colors in business suits and simple accessories that do not appear unprofessional.

A career fair in the current job market is attended by hundreds and in some cases thousands of eager job seekers so a well researched and informed job seeker definitely stands out in the crowd.
