Finding a job at a recruiting fair can be a hit-or-miss process, but these simple tips will help job seekers make the best impression on potential employers.

Job fairs are rich opportunities for job seekers to meet recruiters, learn about open positions and get their feet in the door of major companies. To make the best impression on potential employers, candidates should thoroughly prepare for the event in advance.

A professional appearance, engaged demeanor and confident presentation are just a few of the necessary tools needed to make an impact. Doing some background research and planning prior to the job fair will pay off when speaking to recruiters, and increase the chance of landing a job.

Here are some simple steps for preparation.

A Few Days Before the Job Fair

  • Send an RSVP or register, if necessary, to the organization that is producing the job fair.
  • If the job fair has a Web site, be sure to read all of the available information about the fair online. If there’s a list of companies that will be present at the fair, make a note of any significant companies.
  • Spruce up a resume. Be certain that the information is up-to-date and pertinent to employment goals. Then, print out several copies to bring to the fair.
  • Bring a stack of business cards for freelancing opportunities in addition to a resume.

The Day Before the Job Fair

  • A professional appearance signals that a candidate is serious about finding employment. Choose to wear business attire that reflects a dependable, hardworking attitude.
  • For men, a suit and tie are essential – and don’t forget dress shoes, such as wingtips or loafers. No sneakers!
  • For women, skirts or trousers are both acceptable, in addition to a blazer and shirt or blouse.
  • Assemble all materials (resumes, business cards, and list of companies) in a folder that keeps papers neat.

The Day of the Job Fair

  • Arrive on time, or even a few minutes early.
  • If there is a line at the entrance, make conversation with the people nearby. Gauge other attendees’ attitudes about what they expect at the fair and their chances of employment success.
  • Job fairs can be intimidating, but candidates who exude a sense of confidence stand out from the crowd.

Unemployment can be discouraging, but that shouldn't stop candidates who are serious about finding new careers. By preparing for job fairs in advance – planning a professional appearance, doing research on companies beforehand and bringing an updated, complete resume – job seekers can increase their chances of making great first impressions with recruiters.
