Hunting for a job is a job in itself and with the right tools anyone can be successful.

Most jobs worth doing require a specific set of tools. A carpenter needs hammer, nails, saws and such. A doctor needs stethoscopes, thermometers and scalpels. A teacher needs pencils, paper, books and much more. However, when it comes to job hunting, many people do not consider the tools they will need.

Make no mistake, searching for a job, especially in a tough economy is a job in itself. In order to be successful a job hunter needs the right set of tools in his toolbox. Items such as resumes, letters, scripts, portfolios and more can help make job seeking a much more manageable task.

Create an Application

One of the first items that should be in a job hunting toolbox is a completed job application. Depending on the type of work a job hunter wants he may need to create a generic job application. Many jobs in the retail and general office work sector require these applications as part of the interviewing process.

By creating a generic one ahead of time the job hunter is able to spend time crafting answers that will set him apart. Additionally it saves time when filling out the job specific ones as a few simple edits are all that is generally needed.

Write a Basic Cover Letter

No matter what type of job one is applying for a cover letter will be needed. Creating a basic one ahead of time means the job hunter will always have one on hand if the opportunity arises. This will also save time as most cover letters are fairly standard and with some minimal alteration a personalized cover letter can be created for any position.

Create a Resume

The most important tool in any job hunting toolbox is a resume. Write up a basic resume that can be easily revised for any job. The importance of the resume goes beyond the document itself; it helps the job seeker encapsulate exactly who he is and what he does.

Be sure to limit the resume to one page, two at most for high level professional and include pertinent information such as work history, education and qualifications. Keep multiple copies on hand. Opportunities arise in the course of everyday life and being prepared to take advantage of those opportunities is what a job hunting toolbox is all about.

Prepare a Phone Script

This tool is often overlooked but one missed opportunity will proves its value. And best of all it is one of the easiest pieces of the job hunting toolbox to create. Develop a 30 second script for phone interviews. Whether it is for cold calling potential employers are a pre-interview with a screener knowing what to say ahead of time makes the whole process painless.

Make an Interview Portfolio

Finally every job seeker needs and impressive portfolio. Make a portfolio that includes certificates, awards, letters of recommendation, references and any other documents that verify and support your qualifications. This is a vital prop during any interview, so ensure that it is complete and compelling.

Once a job hunter has created his job hunting toolbox he is ready to begin the arduous task of actually seeking out that perfect job. But now he'll be prepared for what every opportunity arises.
