After years in college graduates want their education to give them a rewarding career.

Many college students leave school with little idea of where and how they are going to find work. When the economy is weak, it is harder than usual for these students to obtain gainful employment. Knowing what to do and where to look in order to find employment will help newly graduated college students find a job that will put them on the path for the career of their dreams.

Review Resume

Students should take time to review their resumes. Care should be taken to ensure that resumes are free from spelling and grammar errors. Contact information for former employers should be current and accurate. Students should review their work history to ensure that dates are correct.

Resumes should be read over by another person. A fresh pair of eyes will ensure that the resume is clear and free of errors. Students may benefit from a resume workshop that is held on campus. The college’s Student Career Center should be contacted for dates and times of these workshops.

Local Papers

It may sound old fashioned, but searching the local newspaper can help a college student’s job search. The experience gained from working in small businesses can give a new college graduate the first job she needs to get started. If jobs are unavailable where the student is located, he should look at the newspaper in his hometown to see what is available.

Placing resumes on search engines such as Monster.com can raise the visibility of recent college graduates. Users are asked to upload their resume so that perspective employers can view them. They are also invited to apply for the available jobs listed on the site.

Working From Home

Some new college graduates opt to be their own boss and work from home. Starting a new business using her unique skills allows a new graduate the freedom to grow in a career of her choosing. Flex Jobs lists employers who are looking for workers will work for their company from home. Writers can look for freelance work at sites such as Suite 101.

Government Employers

The government is the largest employer in the United States. New graduates should consider working for a governmental office after college. Most government jobs offer benefits such as 410k’s, health and dental insurance and paid vacations. Even in a slow economy, governmental offices are hiring in one sector or another.

Dress for Interview

College graduates looking for their first post college job should invest in interview clothes. Suits are appropriate for most setting for both men and women. Ironing clothes and polishing shoes gives the impression that the new graduate is serious about finding employment. Remember that first impressions are the most lasting. Hair should be neat, clean and simple. Men should wear no jewelry except for a wedding band. Women should limit jewelry to a pair of stud earrings, a simple necklace, engagement ring and wedding band.

Finding employment takes more than sending out a resume and hoping for the best. A job seeker should do everything in her power to ensure that her resume is proofread and free of errors. New college graduates should endeavor to use the tools available on the internet to find employment. Dressing well at interview will leave a favorable opinion in the minds of potential employers. With careful work and persistence, a work will be found for the diligent college student.
