Finding a Job Using Effective Strategies and Techniques

Dec 15, 2009 Lyn Rasmussen

Time, commitment, planning and strategising are needed to secure the right job. The hunt for a job is a marketing campaign where the candidate is selling him or herself.

Searching for and securing a job vacancy is a job in itself. Candidates will increase their chances by implementing strategic job search techniques.

Job Seekers Should Pinpoint Work That is Compatible With Their Values

People will be happiest and work most effectively when their workplace is compatible with their skills, values and interests. Candidates should try to identify what is important for them in a job, and have an idea of where they might decide to compromise and where they need to stand firm.

This may sound idealistic, but for long-term job satisfaction and when time allows, it’s useful to consider these points before embarking on the job hunt. Accepting the first position offered may result in becoming entrenched in work that offers little challenge or fulfilment in the long term.

Job Search Techniques – Explore All Avenues When Looking for the Right Job

Job searches should not be restricted to newspapers. Studies have shown that only 65% of jobs are advertised in tabloids. Candidates should therefore explore all possible avenues to pinpoint vacancies that interest them. Searches could include:

  • online searches
  • recruitment agencies
  • government websites
  • notices and posters
  • organisational newsletters and websites
  • networking among friends, colleagues, family and acquaintances
  • cold call
  • if candidates wish to take a sideways step or are seeking promotion within their current organisation, they should make sure the appropriate personnel are aware, and book time with them to discuss the prospects

A Professional Resume and Cover Letter are Requisite to Finding a Job

Job seekers should make sure resumes are up to date, clean and professionally presented. The resume should detail relevant work experience, skills and achievements clearly and concisely. It may be necessary to alter the resume to fit different roles. Other skills may need to be highlighted, or referees changed to suit specific positions.

A resume is a living document that should be targeted to suit each position. A generic resume is unlikely to impress any recruitment officer. Make sure contact details are current and comprehensive: landline, mobile, email and physical address in preference to a post office box.

The cover letter is a crucial tool. It is the first impression that recruitment officers receive of the candidate. The cover letter should:

  • be typewritten in conventional business format
  • be without spelling or typing errors
  • include all contact details of the candidate
  • be addressed to the appropriate person
  • state the vacancy and vacancy number if known
  • briefly relate recent experience and achievements relevant to the key requirements of the vacancy, and give clear reason/s why this person is the right candidate for this job
  • politely request an interview
  • thank the reader for consideration

Neither the resume nor the cover letter should be taken lightly. Any attempt at humour is out of place in these vital documents which should always be posted or delivered in A4 format, never folded. If candidates are not confident in their ability to prepare a professional CV and cover letter, they should seek the services of a professional resume writer.

The job market is competitive in most areas. It pays to take the initiative by implementing strategic job searching techniques. The outcome could pay off for a lifetime.
