Frequently feel like second best when it comes to job hunting? Tough as it might be it's important to push forward even it's just easier to give up.

Job seekers who feel like they have the perfect background and experience for a job and go through the interview process only to be disappointed that another candidate is selected should know they are not alone. Even with the perfect resume and interview skills, things can go awry.

Sometimes the decision to hire another candidate comes from a higher authority. It might be that an unexpected internal candidate suddenly appears on the horizon. For whatever reason, right or wrong, something happened to change the playing field.

While the thought that “the perfect job” was lost through no fault of their own doesn’t make most job seekers feel any better, it might help to keep these tactics in mind when conducting a job search.

Keep a Fire Under the Job Search Process at All Times

Job seekers should not rest on their laurels. Just because someone has been through three great interviews with various company representatives doesn’t mean that the job is in the bag. Who knows how many other candidates the company might be interviewing or what might happen in the days and weeks before an offer is actually tendered. Don’t let another perfect job slip by due to lack of action.

The fact of the matter is that job seekers, everyone in fact, employed or not, should always be on the look out for a great employment opportunity. Whether they think they are in the perfect job now or are out pounding the pavement to find one, have a resume at the ready and eyes wide open. No one knows when the right opportunity might strike.

Don’t Become Committed to the “Perfect Job”

Sometimes what happens is candidates fall in love with a job, a company, their potential new boss and then they can’t see the forest for the trees. Don’t fall in love.

First, when job seekers commit to only one opportunity, others that are equal or maybe even better can pass them by. Second, as already discussed, there are no guarantees. Anything can happen, from the company suddenly going out of business to the incumbent changing their mind about leaving.

Finally, when job seekers commit to just one opportunity -- and this is the worst part -- and then wait and wait for an offer, expecting that they are the chosen one, what happens if the offer extended to them doesn't live up to their expectations? Now they have gotten what they wanted and less. So the crucial decision becomes do they accept the less than stellar offer or do they start their search again?

Always Have a Good Job Search Outlook

As difficult and arduous a task as job hunting can be, it is important to keep the faith. Know that the right employment opportunity is out there waiting. It might not be perfect, but it is likely close enough to be satisfying. However, job seekers who let the whole process beat them down will have a more difficult time of it. And it will likely show in how they do in future job interviews.

Know that there are just some things beyond the average person’s control. If the “perfect job” seems to come and go, it just may mean it really wasn’t that perfect after all.
